The Communications and Marketing Generalist is a .75 FTE or 30-hour-per-week position. This role is responsible for planning and executing an array of projects in support of the Bakken Center for Spirituality & Healing. This position’s work will impact Center students, staff, faculty, friends, and alumni, as well as the external community around the metro area, state, country, and world.
This person will report to the Director of Communications and perform a wide range of internal and external communications work, including mass emails and newsletters, social media, and web content, ensuring consistent and effective messaging across all platforms.
Additionally, the communications and marketing generalist will be responsible for planning and executing paid and organic content campaigns, including via social media, apps, websites, and traditional print media for all areas of the Center’s work, including academic programs, events, and research.
To support the Center’s marketing initiatives, the person in this position will identify, implement, or develop marketing strategies, analyze trends, branding, advertising, and promotions.
This entry-level position has an anticipated starting rate at or near the minimum rate for this classification of $20.85 per hour.
Duties and Responsibilities
30% - Creates and develops print and online communications for Center teams, including Taking Charge sites, academics, business development, outreach, and research. Manages audience curation across social media platforms.
30% - Manages content on the Center’s website and Taking Charge of Your Wellbeing website
25% - Executes and plans strategic advertising opportunities
10% - Builds and maintains strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders
5% - Stays up-to-date on trends and strategies for online communication and integrative health and wellbeing, including digital advertising and search engine optimization

Qualifications
Required Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least four years in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.
- Skilled in writing for online and print formats for a variety of audiences.
- Experience designing and executing paid and organic social media campaigns (content and advertising) and creating content.
- Expertise in website content development and creation.
- Management and distribution of online newsletters and targeted emails.
- Ability to work in a team environment, think critically, take direction, and also take the initiative to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a marketing or communications role in a higher education setting.
- Experience working within Drupal content management systems.
- Experience working with SalesForce Marketing Cloud and/or MailChimp

The Graphic and Visual Designer is a .75 FTE or 30-hour-per-week position. This role will create visual content using a combination of forms such as text, audio, images, photography, animation, video, and interactive content to communicate themes and messages for communications materials. This position’s work will impact Bakken Center for Spirituality & Healing students, staff, faculty, friends, and alumni, and the external community around the metro area, state, country, and world.
Reporting to the Director of Communications, this person will perform a broad range of internal and external design work including print and digital advertising, social media tiles, fliers, videos, online newsletter and web content, original illustrations, the Bakken Center’s biennial magazine Mandala, and more.
Additionally, the designer will use graphic software, web-based graphics, or other design tools to create accurate finished products. The designer will help maintain and develop brand identity, design standards, and policies for the Bakken Center.
This entry-level position has an anticipated starting rate at or near the minimum rate for this classification of $21.83 per hour.

About the Department
Founded in 1995, the Center works with interdisciplinary centers and administrative and collegiate units throughout all University of Minnesota campuses. Our faculty – nearly 70 in number – are leaders from diverse academic and clinical backgrounds and are passionate experts in their fields.
