CSPH 5000-004: Walking, Wellbeing, and Wonder: An Introduction to Facilitated Green Exercise
The course is offered completely online. Check the Schedule Builder for semester dates.
This course is based on the systematic review of Facilitated Green Exercise studies comparing indoor versus outdoor activity conducted in natural environment; and suggests outdoor activity that is conducted in a natural or green environment have greater impact on feelings of revitalization and positive engagement. The course will examine Facilitated Green Exercise and the physiological and mental health benefits that appear to occur when exercise is performed in an outdoor environment. The course will also look at our connection to nature and its important implications on human health and wellbeing. The course will also explain the theories, practices, and science behind Green Exercise. Students will apply what they learn into a case study and practice what they are learning with experiential activities.
The course will also investigate the barriers to nature and will consider them when discussing how to make exercise in the outdoors accessible and beneficial for all. Essentially the course will emphasis the synergistic combination of exercise and
exposure to nature and thus how the ‘great outdoors’ could be used as a powerful tool to help fight the growing incidence of both physical inactivity, non-communicable disease and our disconnection from nature.
