CSPH 5705: Health Coaching Professional Internship

At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to:

• Apply one’s health coaching knowledge and skills with confidence and efficiency in a specific service venue, in a safe and effective manner.
• Apply knowledge of a holistic framework and the core coaching constructs--change theory, therapeutic relationship, modeling, and goal setting—with clients in an actual clinical venue.
• Independently and appropriately apply the knowledge of holistic principles and innate healing capacity in coaching interactions with clients.
• Demonstrate the use of multiple ways of knowing in assisting clients in constructing individual integrative health plans.
• Demonstrate principles of effective interpersonal communication skills with supervisors and colleagues in professional interactions.
• Demonstrate effective teaching skills, including an ability to:
  • Educate individual clients about health risks, health information sources, appropriate services and care (both conventional and complementary), as well as cost, value, and potential benefits of these services.
  • Inform groups of lay and professional individuals as to the nature of health coaching as a profession, including its indications and possible benefits.
• Identify specific issues in the health coaching profession including scope of practice, licensure, regulation, and financial sustainability, which will impact student’s future practice plans, and address these issues in the individual’s career plan.
• Demonstrate professional behaviors of timeliness and attendance; appropriate attire and demeanor; client follow-through; ability to accept constructive feedback and to adapt to clinical situations requiring flexibility; and to discern one’s own level of competence and need for assistance.
• Demonstrate the ability to successfully recruit clients from a provided potential population, through educational and marketing activities.
